feet in the sand with the clan...d

I can't believe we are a month away from Lauren & Justin's wedding at Nottoway Plantation! I feel like Lauren and I have been talking about this wedding since, well, forever and I can't believe it is here! I was lucky enough to get to share in her bachelorette party in Gulf Shores, AL with a gathering of her friends from elementary, high school, and college. There was a little bit of me that wondered how the weekend would go since I'm the "work friend", but these girls put any fears I had to rest on the drive to the beach. As you can read here, we weren't even sure we could make this trip due to Isaac, but I'm so glad we did. The weather was perfection. Leaving on Friday morning, we stopped in Baton Rouge to pick up Laura and dine at the Chimes.Unfortunately they were out of the alligator appetizer, but the boudin balls were spicy and delicious.
"Sing-screaming" to 90s rap songs on the drive to the beach could possibly be my favorite part of the whole bachelorette weekend. Who doesn't use their phone as a microphone, I'd like to know?
The next few days consisted of me trying not to turn into a red lobster on the beach, while still having fun in the sand. I have to tell you- I applied SPF 75 in the condo and then reapplied with 100on the beach and I still got some sun. Gone are the days of  lathering myself in baby oil. Ahh, getting older (and wiser) is awesome, but certainly more pasty! On Saturday night we went to Flora-bama, which has grown considerably since the last time I was there. They have three music stages and more bars than I can count. It was shoulder-to-shoulder crowded, but we found a sweet spot in front of an industrial fan and danced the night away.
Our last night at the condo we cooked spaghetti, drank wine, opened presents and played bachelorette games that turned into baring our souls to one another. It was kind of priceless.
I can't WAIT for your wedding next month, Lauren. You are the BEST. Thanks for being you...and thanks for having kick a$$ friends.

quit playing games with my heart...

We had a few people over for spontaneous house party/game night a couple of days ago. I was shocked and excited at the number of responses from my friends who were up to playing Scattergories with me. I found out pretty quickly that the second the timer starts, my mind turns off. I can't handle the pressure! tick-tock-tick-tock..."Ugh, what's a type of weather that starts with a K??"

My Cole Porter Pandora station really set the mood. I hope there are more of these game nights!
What should we play next time?

putting out fires, drinking lemon drops, and calling security...

Why haven't I posted anything on focused LINZ since the beginning of the month? I guess I haven't been very focused! I have taken a 2 week break from documenting my life with a ridiculous amount of photos. I am sure my family and friends are appreciative not to have a flash in their face by the crazy camera lady...my nickname really is razzi for paparazzi. This isn't to say I don't have 600 pictures from the Christmas holiday that plan to share. I am working on narrowing down and making a photo collage of said photos. (600 is not an exaggeration.)

These last 2 weeks have been filled with planning for a work conference that occured on Friday and Saturday of this past weekend. Through the concerted efforts of my co-workers, Keran, Katie, Lauren, and Matt, we pulled off a pretty good show. Things to remember about the weekend: 1. Although styrofoam-mardi gras colored-glitter balls are pretty in hurricane vases with a lit candle- remember they are highly flammable. 2. Figure out the microphone sound and cd/music sound before the President of the meeting gets up to give his opening remarks. Remember- some people are low talkers. 3. Things can get loud at the hotel bar after a lemon drop martini, vodka and ginger ale, and some red bull + a beer. Remember- you have a higher tolerance than most. 3. Arkansas people cannot handle their hot wings aka a big bowl of meat. 4. If someone dares enter your private conference that is strolling through the exhibitor booths thinking it is part of the car show going on downstairs, it's best to call security immediately. 5. Remember to properly thank everyone individually for the time they have given to make the event a success. Thank you!

no time like the present...

Isn't the week before Christmas just glorious!? I feel like everyone is walking around with a smile on their face. There is a steady rush of traffic searching for the perfect gift, festive holiday cards in the mailbox, neighborhoods lit with twinkle lights, delicious gift baskets filled with more sweets than should be allowed in my presence... the collective intent of goodwill to all is palpable. The Christmas parties ain't bad either...

(I have so many pictures of me making faces at Ty while he snaps away...ah, don't i look pleased?!)
(I am full of faces-awkward, silly, big teeth grin... I really need to start practicing in the mirror.)

lately through the linz...

Just as I suspected of my little procrastinating self...I haven't bought one Christmas gift. Have I made a list of the perfect gifts for my family? - yes. Have I dared attempt the holiday traffic to get them? - no. So, what have I been doing lately?

big tigers, little tigers...

Last weekend Lauren and I went with Katie to her hometown of Winnfield. It is a small town in Cenla (Central Louisiana) that has so much character! I can see where Katie gets it from. I have been hearing stories about Mr. Von, Mrs. Kim, Blake and Samantha since Katie started working at LSU with me, but it wasn't until I got to spend a Saturday afternoon eating the most delicious bbq chicken off the grill and watching the LSU tigers play and win, that I understood the family. From the second I walked through the door I felt like family. The casual way we were offered something to drink, the mountains of food on the counter, too many dogs to count, and the steady stream of people coming in and out of the back door showed me how welcoming they are and how comfortable their house is for everyone. I asked Katie if "all this" was for Blake's birthday and she said,"Oh no, they cook like this all the time." Coffee is brewing at all times- often referred to as "el coffee" by Mr. Von for all of you Spanish speakers. A pig named Champ that was found in the river as a baby prances around the side yard and has to be the biggest hog I have ever seen. (His diet includes Puppy Chow and corn.) After the LSU game we went to Blake's studio where any instrument can be found. We all joined in for an impromptu jam session.
Katie and her family were celebrating her Pawpaw's 91st birthday over the weekend. Since Winnfield Tiger football team has made it to the State Championship, the first time since 1982, we made her grandfather a sweatshirt with iron-on letters, "Shelton #1," to wear to the game. Pawpaw's youngest grandson, Jon, will be playing in the game as the kicker this Saturday against John Curtis. He refers to LSU tigers as the big tigers and Winnfield as the little tigers, which I think is so adorable! The entire town is covered with signage wishing the team well. Even the preacher on Sunday had the congregation applaud the team for making it this far! Katie says that the whole town will be at the game- and I really do believe her.
Good luck little Tigers!

at my third Christmas party...

First of all, I can't believe it's Christmas time. Second of all, I can't believe I have now attended my third Christmas party at my boss's house! {Remember last year?} I have been working at LSU for a long time now! Crazy. Most of my coworkers and I started around the same time. We have grown close to one another because of our jobs. This Christmas party was bitter sweet because I know, for a number of them, it will be their last. I get so sentimental about these things... I almost started crying at the party when I thought about it. I have said it before, and I'll probably say it again... I know that some days at work are the most grueling, exhausting and frustrating that we just want to scream, but we are all so lucky to work with each other. I have been truly blessed to be surrounded by such supportive people. Without everyone's optimism and encouragement I doubt any of us would have lasted this long. Most of us spend more time at work than we do at home...kindness and thoughtfulness go a long way.

So, I'm walking around snapping pictures of the party when I get a tap-tap-tap on my shoulder. I was asked by an older gentleman, "Are you taking pictures professionally?" I answer "Well, I work for the department..." He says, "Did you know there is a Princess here? Princess ______ of _____." For the life of me I cannot remember what he said because I was so dumbfounded. The man proceeds by getting her attention and inform her that I want to take her picture. She politely asks where I would like her to stand and I suggest a location were their wouldn't be people behind her. Then the most odd thing happens. She picks up that nutcracker and poses with it. It was so bizarre.
Of course I shared the "Princess Story" with everyone. Now we know how to pose like a princess!

breaking danh...

No, I have not misspelled the Twilight Saga that opens tonight! Lauren, Katie and I went to Danh's Garden recently because we were craving their chicken pad thai with peanut sauce. I love this dish SO much! It hits my favorite flavor notes - sweet and savory - and the peanut sauce?! I could drink this stuff through a straw! Although the building looks questionable, the food more than makes up for the lackluster location.
Tison's favorite dish is B6- Stir Fry Lemon Grass Beef Noodle Salad. He was so mad I went without him. Hehe! Until we meet again Danh...

"how old are you?"

"How old are you?" was a question I got from Tison when I told him I had joined a book club. I am never quick on my feet with immediate replies so I am pretty sure I said something resembling, " Oh yeah, well how old are you?!" I'm working on my ability have quick and clever rebuttals, I promise. So when I join a bridge club I will have something really snazzy to say...

Our most recent read was Pioneer Woman: From Black Heels to Tractor Wheels. If any of you read this and loved it, I do apologize for admitting I couldn't even finish the book. I am sure this woman is precious and her Marlboro Man is the definition of "Knight in Shining Armour," but I just couldn't get into it. However, the book club nights are always fun. I had no idea when we started this thing how much I would enjoy talking about the book (or part of the book) that I read. These girls have their opinions honey and I love getting to agree, disagree, or agree to disagree with them.

We all agreed that the recipes by Pioneer Woman were delicious! My mouth salivates every time I think about the sweet marinated tomatoes Diane made; the fig-prosciutto pizza with arugula by our host Laura was such an unusual coupling that I can't wait to make it at home.

I heart you book club!

Our next book is Pride & Prejudice. This will be my third time reading this Jane Austen masterpiece. I am ready to fall in love with Mr. Darcy all over again.

Myrtles Plantation

The ZeltaMae Girls and I went to St. Francisville at the end of last month to view "One of America's Most Haunted Homes." Myrtles Plantation, although beautiful in the daylight, reveals incredibly spooky tales via their evening mystery tours. It definitely left me with the heebie-jeebies! Read the details of our weekend by Lauren Sowell here, pages 38-40. (Be sure to visit her blog to hear about her exciting news!)

I'm off to pass out candy to (hopefully) cute little kids and not non-costumed teenagers.
Happy Halloween!

Logan Mansion: Steeped in History and Intrigue

I finally snagged my favorite writer, blogger, coworker, and friend to guest post today. She really needs no introduction on this blog because most of my activites shown here involve our little adventures! If you haven't seen this grammar queen's blog, please do so now. We recently went to Logan Mansion. I'm the photo snatcher - she's the story catcher!

hi, everyone! i'm lauren from siddathornton. today i am so excited to do a little guest post over here on focusedlinz!  thank you so much, lindsey, for giving me the opportunity to write a little something on your pretty blog.

As Lindsey and I pulled up to the historic Logan Mansion, located at 725 Austen Place in Shreveport, we were not totally sure what to expect. The imminence of this 114-year-old Victorian home loomed in the distance, and we were equal parts excited and anxious.

Of course we had heard this sprawling mansion was haunted – most people in Shreveport have heard a passing story or two surrounding the estate.

We all but tip-toed up the front steps to the grandly gilded front door, noticing the name Logan etched into the mail slot flap. After we knocked, anticipation mounted, and the door was then thrown open by Billy LeBrun, closely followed by his wife, Vicki.

The LeBruns have owned, operated, and renovated Logan Mansion since 2005, a fact that Vicki herself says she would never have imagined before receiving the phone call that the previous owners were ready to sell.

“I have always wanted a Victorian Home,” she said. “It filled a void that I didn’t know was there – it was a God thing.”

After many trips visiting the Logan Mansion, sometimes simply to peer into the windows of the then-dilapidated house, Vicki can now claim the house as her own.

And as we listened to her speak of the house’s history, it is clear that her passion for the estate runs deep: no detail was left to the imagination as she described the history and past ownership of the house.

Logan Mansion was built in 1897, by Lafayette Robert Logan, a property owner, brewer, and ice manufacturer of great success. And his great success is not lost in the details of the home: different wood in each room, ranging from mahogany to cherry, speaks to his love of detail and extravagance, as does the tile imported from Holland, some of which surrounds the mantle of the sitting room fire place. Further detail can be found in the molding of the rooms, into which barley beer hops are incorporated, a nod toward the family’s involvement in brewing.

Amazingly enough, we learned that much of the original details of the house have been preserved. For example, none of the woodwork in the house has ever been painted – in 114 years. Furthermore, the footprint of the 17-room house, or original layout, has remained untouched.

As we learned of the house’s history and architecture, Lindsey and I couldn’t help but wonder about the root of the house’s infamous haunted status, but Vicki certainly didn’t disappoint.

“Six weeks after moving into the house, people were asking us if we had met the ghost yet,” Vicki relates.

And yes, they have met the ghost, whom they refer to as Theodora, the daughter of the Logans’ neighbor, who leapt from the third floor attic window of the house in May of 1904.

“I keep a journal about the happenings,” Vicki said.

Happenings they have encountered include items, such as an address book normally kept in one of the kitchen drawers, disappearing for weeks on end, only to return to its normal location. Cell phones have also gone missing, only to turn up in parts of the house the owners of said phones had not visited. It seems Theodora has a sense of humor, stealing lids of chafing dishes and placing them in windowsills to be found at the end of the day, as well as hiding a lone crutch of a visitor behind the couch.

Vicki says Theodora has even locked her out of the house a couple of times.

“I told Theodora to stop doing that,” Vicki said, “and it hasn’t happened since.”

In addition, folks have claimed to see people in the windows of the upstairs, even when no one was actually in the house. And paranormal-sensitive people have become overwhelmed with emotion in certain rooms of the house.

It was enough to have chill bumps rising on our arms, as we listened to the various tales.

Our visit was wrapped up by taking a tour of the grand home, and we were given tangible visions of the scenery to all of the history we had just learned.

If you are looking for a trip into the Victorian past, sprinkled in with a bit of haunted mystique, the Logan Mansion is just the ticket you’ve been searching for.

Vicki offers tours year-round, at any time, but requests that appointments be made. There will be a Halloween tour the Saturday before Halloween. The cost is $10 per person, and tours will be given between 6 and 9 p.m. They are child-appropriate.

Contact the Logan Mansion by calling 318-459-2285 or emailing lebrunbilly@att.net.

thanks again to lindsey for letting me post over here today.
hope everyone has a lovely thursday & enjoys the weekend to come.

Lunch with Lauren & Lindsey...

Lunch with Lauren & Lindsey used to be a staple in my blog post schedule....and I use the word "schedule" very loosely... but remember how much fun Lauren and I had on our little get away from the office lunch breaks? (seen here, here, here, and here) Lunch outings are my favorite! There are so many fun places to eat in the Shreveport-Bossier area. I am not a huge fan of chain restaurants (who is?) and my heart goes out to local restaurants. The food is always better and typically they are so quaint. Here's a recent outing with Lauren and Katie to Zocolo.
Where should "Lunch with Lauren, Lindsey, and Katie" be next?  Any suggestions?
